We’re hiring a Communications Assistant!

Crude Accountability is an environmental and human rights nonprofit organization that works with communities in the Caspian and Black Sea regions battling threats to local natural resources and the negative impacts on their health. Crude Accountability works on the local, national, regional, and international levels in partnership with active communities and organizations committed to a just and environmentally sustainable world.

Based in Northern Virginia, Crude Accountability also collaborates with environmental organizations in the United States working on similar issues.

We are currently seeking a full-time Communications Assistant to provide support to our staff and consultants. The position is full-time (40 work hours per week) and is a remote position. 

As the Communications Assistant, your responsibilities will include supporting communications operations and contributing to the creation, production, and distribution of digital and print materials. Other tasks may be assigned per organizational needs.

You will report to the Communications and Research Director and also work closely with the Executive Director and the research team.

The position requires a working proficiency in Russian (reading, speaking, and some writing). Expertise in Eurasian, Central Asian, or Russian regional studies is strongly preferred.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Collaborate with the Communications and Research Director and staff to develop and implement Crude Accountability’s communications strategy to reach key audiences.
  • Support staff and consultants in designing and editing materials for various audiences.
  • Assist the Communications and Research Director in tracking products and materials according to deadlines.
  • Coordinate online and offline events for staff and partners.
  • Assist the Communications Director in managing websites, editing web materials, and publishing content on WordPress-based platforms and social media.
  • Contribute to the Caspian Voices blog by soliciting creative posts, editing content, and promoting it.
  • Put together a monthly newsletter and other communications and marketing materials as needed. 
  • Regularly monitor and report social media metrics.
  • Expand databases of potential audiences and provide outreach and support to key audiences interested in our materials and reports.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or degree in progress in communications, marketing, international relations/development, regional studies, or a related field.
  • Strong English writing skills.
  • Working proficiency in the Russian language (reading, speaking, some writing).
  • Some experience with graphic design and visual communications creation.
  • Some experience with WordPress or other content management platforms. 
  • Experience in event planning and coordination.
  • Expertise in Central Asia, Eurasia, and/or Russia regional studies is desirable.
  • Overseas work or study experience or active involvement in international exchange is an asset.
  • Interest in energy, environment, and human rights. 
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and understanding of political issues in the regions of interest, with the ability to facilitate relationships among people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow digital security protocols.
  • Comfort working in a small team environment.
  • Honest approach to work tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience working in remote settings.
