History in Turkmenistan
A comprehensive history of Schlumberger’s activities since it began work in Turkmenistan in 1998 is not available. Schlumberger signed two consecutive five-year agreements with Turkmenneft, the second of which was signed in 2004. The company was contracted by Dragon Oil in 2003 to provide a number of services at the LAM Field in the offshore Cheleken block.[ii] According to a September 2006 article, “Schlumberger is operating at oilfields in western Turkmenistan under a five-year contract with Turkmenneft worth $36m signed in 2004…Schlumberger is helping the national companies increase oil production in western Turkmenistan. The contract covered operations in the Kotur Tepe, South Kamyshldzha and Koperdzhe oilfields. Schlumberger has taken part in servicing the fields’ wells and provides necessary equipment.”[iii]

Current Scope of Operations
In 2013,
Schlumberger and Turkmengeology State Corporation signed a contract for “drilling services, the preparation of drilling fluids, and the strengthening of well casing[s] at three development wells at the Galkynysh field.”[iv] The company reported a 1% revenue increase that year, partly due to offshore operations in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.[v]

Schlumberger was a bronze sponsor (2010) and a silver sponsor (2020) of the Turkmenistan International Oil and Gas Conference.[vi]
