History in Turkmenistan
According to a 2011 report by a Norwegian paper[i], Equinor received criticism from the Norwegian Helsinki Committee for its involvement in Turkmenistan because of its deplorable human rights record. Equinor, however, allegedly held a protest of sorts against the Turkmenistani government, and President, by refusing to hail Berdymukhamedov or address him in opening remarks. By this, the company attempted to distinguish itself from its competitors who gave the expected homage to the President. However, their presence in a country ripe with widespread corruption and the concentration of wealth in the President’s inner circle says otherwise.
According to a 2015 report by Publish What You Pay[ii], posted by the US. Securities and Exchange Commission, Equinor’s subsidiary, Statoil Turkmenistan AS, was still active in the country. Curiously, the company indicated it had no active employees within the subsidiary.
Statoil was one of the silver sponsors of the 2010 Turkmenistan International Oil & Gas Conference.
Current Scope of Operations
As of 2021, we have found no further updates on the activities of this company in Turkmenistan.
