Statement by Crude Accountability on Being Declared an Undesirable Organization by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation

February 10, 2026

On January 19, 2026, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation declared Crude Accountability, Incorporated, a 501(c)3 organization based in the USA, an undesirable organization. Crude Accountability learned of this designation from an article published in gazeta.ru, which ran February 5, 2026.

Although no reason was stated for this decision, we believe this action was taken to impede the work Crude Accountability carries out to protect the environmental and human rights of people and communities who are marginalized by extractive, corporate, and authoritarian actions.

Crude Accountability holds in high esteem the leadership and expertise of frontline communities and believes that local peoples are the best stewards of their environments. Crude Accountability collaborates on the national, regional, and international levels with those committed to a just, equitable, and environmentally sustainable world.

Crude Accountability is committed to the principles of transparency, cooperation, and scientific inquiry. We acknowledge the systems of racial and economic injustice, including kleptocracy, which must be dismantled in order to bring social and environmental justice to communities most affected by environmental exploitation and the climate crisis. We embrace people of all backgrounds and identities, and seek to foster a culture of inclusion and accessibility. We prioritize historically marginalized voices.

Crude Accountability envisions a world in which the human rights of all people, including the right to a clean environment, underlie the foundation of society.
