LINDEN, Va. – Crude Accountability announces the publication of its new report, “Analysis & Policy Implications of Azerbaijan’s Energy Strategy: Gas Laundromat, Sanctions Exposure, and Transition Pathways,” by Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu.
The report examines the ways in which Azerbaijan is currently expanding its role as a petrostate.
After hosting COP29, when the expectation would be an expanded renewable and sustainable energy strategy, Azerbaijan has doubled down on its role as a fossil fuel producer and exporter.
The report focuses on numerous aspects of this development, including its engagement with the European Union, the Russian Federation, the US, and other fossil fuel partners.
“This week, as we mark both International Anti-Corruption Day and Human Rights Day, we are proud to publish Dr. Ibadoghlu’s latest work,” said Kate Watters, Crude Accountability’s executive director.
Dr. Ibadoghlu, who has been under house arrest since April 2024, following nine harrowing months in pre-trial detention, has been detained by the Azerbaijani government on trumped-up charges, and denied access to a fair trial, critically needed medical care, and contact with his family. Crude Accountability continues to call for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Ibadoghlu, who has been detained for his anti-corruption, environmental, and human rights work.
Azerbaijan’s production and export of fossil fuels comes at great cost to the country’s citizens, who benefit little from the government’s petro-wealth.
