Children Poisoned by Unknown Toxins in Berezovka, Kazakhstan, Close to the Karachaganak Oil and Gas Condensate Field

On November 28, 2014, twenty two people (19 children and 3 adults) in the village of Berezovka in western Kazakhstan were poisoned by an unknown toxic substance. The village is located in dangerous proximity to the Karachaganak Oil and Gas Condensate Field, operated by the Karachaganak Petroleum Operating, B.V. consortium, comprised of British Gas, Italy’s ENI, Chevron, Lukoil and Kazmunaigaz. After claiming for several days that they did not know what caused the 22 people to faint, convulse, and require hospitalization, doctors finally stated that the cause was clearly toxic exposure.

Widespread Enforced Disappearances and Torture in Turkmenistan: New reports call for immediate action to ‘Prove They Are Alive!’

The ‘Prove They Are Alive!’ campaign, led by an international coalition of human rights groups, held a briefing today at the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), where it launched two reports, Prove They Are Alive!: The Disappeared in Turkmenistan, and Ovadan Depe: Medieval Torture in Modern Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan: End Enforced Disappearances

Dozens of people have been forcibly disappeared in Turkmenistan, some for more than a decade, a coalition of human rights groups called the Prove They Are Alive! campaign said today in connection with the International Day of the Disappeared, which is on August 30, 2014. The government of Turkmenistan should immediately inform the relatives of the disappeared of their fate and whereabouts and allow them access to their loved ones.
