History in Turkmenistan
While Total has yet to secure a contract in Turkmenistan, its CEO met with President Berdymukhammedov in November 2010 to discuss the possibilities for gas production and transportation projects. In particular, the leaders discussed a project to transport gas through the proposed Transcaspian pipeline along the Caspian’s seabed, and then further onto Europe via the proposed Nabucco Gas Pipeline project. Total’s CEO reported that the company planed to present proposals to the Government of Turkmenistan in a few months.[i]

Total was a silver sponsor of the 2010 and 2012 Turkmenistan International Oil & Gas Conferences and a silver sponsor of the 2011 Turkmenistan Gas Conference[ii]

Current Scope of Operations

In May 2020, a meeting between representatives of the Turkmen government, Тürkmengaz, Тürkmennebit, and TotalEnergies, including Senior Vice President Stephane Michel, met discuss the “development of offshore blocks of the Turkmen shelf of the Caspian Sea and the implementation of geological and geophysical exploration at the sector” as well as “attracting investments in gas processing projects for mutual implementation in the near future”.[iv]
