History in Turkmenistan
In October 1997, Halliburton announced that it had secured an offshore contract in Turkmenistan under which the company would provide technical services and drilling. According to the press release issued by Halliburton, the company had already been operating in the country for five years at that point. On that same day, it was announced that the Central Asia Gas Pipeline, Ltd (CentGas), a consortium led by Unocal, had been established to build the Central Asia Gas Pipeline from Turkmenistan, through Afghanistan and onto Pakistan.[i] Efforts to build the pipeline were derailed as Unocal’s negotiations with the Taliban became public.[ii]

Halliburton did not list any information about operations in Turkmenistan on its website. However, it was listed by the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat as working in Turkmenistan with Dragon Oil and Petronas.[iii]

Current Scope of Operations
While Halliburton still does not disclose any information on its operations in Turkmenistan, the company is still actively recruiting for operations in the country. Halliburton describes part of its operations in Eurasia as “…high flowrate gas fields in Northern Siberia, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan”. [iv] This indicates that the company’s primary operations in Turkmenistan are within natural gas production/processing. Further, the company lists two open positions, Field Service Rep. I and II, both within “drilling fluids” and both located in Balkanabat, Turkmenistan. [v]
